Cosy evening with a bottle of Le Vieux Telegraphe’s 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape, La Crau, in front of the fire (‘new’ old grate looking pretty - it’s only taken 15 years to find one I like that fits!). We had a case of this CduP. The last, I thought, was in need of drinking. This seemed fresher, the fruit less raisiny and more lively acidity. Tannins present but smooth and, as one would expect of this wine, herbs and spices on the palate. Vina Real Reserva Rioja 2010 in magnum. An excelle Vina Real Reserva Rioja 2010 in magnum. An excellent vintage in Rioja and this wine was perfect to take to friends for supper. We usually regard a decent Rioja as a ‘safe bet’ that will appeal to all tastes and this wine definitely hit the spot! Great depth of fruit, well integrated tannins, complexity from age and oak, drinking very smoothly. Great paired with our hosts’ lamb tagine. We were also responsible for the ‘nibbles’. Pretty pleased with our effort! Nebbiolo 😍 I may be a Burgundy fiend but I do h Nebbiolo 😍 I may be a Burgundy fiend but I do have a teeny weeny obsession with Nebbiolo - of course, of the Piemonte variety, but also more particularly with the Lombardy variety! We used to visit this region very frequently (skiing) and fell in love with their high altitude expression of this lovely grape variety. For those who are familiar with this region’s wines you will know that Sfursato (or Sfursat) is the signature wine of the region. Typically light in terms of colour density (despite its 16% alcohol 😳), this is a fabulously complex and age worthy wine. Red fruits and spice, smooth but present tannins, racing acidity, elegance and powerful palate combined … just stunning! Mid point on the Meursault ‘richness spectrum’ for me, perhaps because it is on the hill in one of the cooler sites. Lemon, lime and ripe green apple with a subtle hint of white blossom. A discrete touch of oak and a vibrant acidity. The star of the show though was a 2017 Rossignol-Trapet Gevrey Chambertin vieilles vignes which was elegant and smooth, present fruit with savoury notes, silky tannins and real finesse. The dish was great but we have identified a few tweaks. The wine requires no tweaking! Christmas Day. Fourth course. Cheese (which we did Christmas Day. Fourth course. Cheese (which we didn’t eat because we were too full!). Washed down (metaphorically speaking) with the most spectacular 2007 Chateau Giscours Margaux. Where do I begin? The fruit was still very present. The body plush. The tannins silky smooth but structure still present in buckets. Fruit but also secondary and tertiary notes of spice and oak and leather. The acidity still capable of holding up a tower block!
